Why are people called Wes so strong?
To put this lift into perspective, Wes Barnett's 220kg American record has been long thought of as the most difficult record to break in USA weightlifting, alongside Shane Hammons 197.5 snatch. I spoke to Glenn Pendlay about Wes Barnett, and he firmly believes that he was quite possibly one of the most athletic people to ever exist... he could have played in the NFL with ease should he have tried.
But now the other Wes, Wes Kitts has just cleaned an equal American record, and it wasn't exactly hard. In fact it didn't even look tricky. It looked about as routine a lift as I have ever seen. He pulls the bar quickly, he stands up quicker... I don't want to speak too soon, but I know a lot of you are thinking it... What can Wes Kitts really clean? Because this 220kg certainly doesn't even look close to his max. I certainly believe he can clean at least 230kg, probably this year. Who knows what he can lift this Olympic quad.
I have been blown away by this lift, and I hope weightlifting fans around the internet realise how astonishing a lift this is. A 200kg clean was a pretty damn good lift 2 years ago. Wes Kitts however might be the guy that starts medalling at worlds. I have heard so many coaches in the US say that they have the talent in this country, they have the people who can win gold medals... I think they might have found him...
