Hubbard Back in New Zealand Team

Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has returned to the New Zealand team. She will represent her country at the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia in April 2019.

Hubbard took a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships, amid some controversy about whether transitioning from male to female gave her an advantage over born-female athletes. She then picked up an injury at the 2018 Commonwealth Games that prevented her from completing the competition.

The Arafura Games is a bronze-level qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. A result in Darwin would keep Hubbard eligible for qualification and raise the possibility of Olympic participation that would be sure to create debate.
