India To Ban Or Fine Three State Federations

The Indian Weightlifting Federation is poised to take action against three state weightlifting federations following a string of drug test failures at national competitions.

The Punjab, Haryana and Karnataka weightlifting federations face a ban after eight athletes tested positive for drugs at the Indian Youth and Junior National Championships in December 2018. Two further failed tests came from the Khelo India Youth Games in January 2019.

According to one source, the federations will be able to avoid being banned by paying a 100,000 Rupee fine (around $1,500), approximately the per-capital annual income of India.
