Weightlifting Will Be In The 2024 Olympics

A decision by the International Olympic Committee means that weightlifting will almost certainly feature at the Paris 2024 Olympics, providing current anti-doping efforts continue.

InsideTheGames has details of the process which will lead to weightlifting moving from provisional inclusion to full inclusion for 2024.

Essentially, the remaining condition is the completion of the transfer of anti-doping operations from the IWF to the International Testing Agency. Once that is done, weightlifting will be moved out of provisional status and, as long as nothing changes for the worse, it will be on the programme at Paris 2024.

This is big news for a sport which has an identity that is tightly bound it its Olympic status. It risked losing that status due to anti-doping violations, especially those from the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. It seems that renewed anti-doping efforts including suspensions of nations with bad records and a new Olympic qualification process have convinced the IOC that things are changing for the better.
