The Weightlifting Federation of Africa Executive Board has taken the decision to postpone the 2020 African Weightlifting Championships until mid-June.
The competition was due to be held from 13th–20th March in Mauritius and was to have been a gold-level Olympic qualification event. Moving the event to June will mean it will now fall outside of the Olympic qualification period.
The postponement comes in the wake of the Asian Championships being similarly affected by the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
Another continental championship being postponed will put pressure on the IWF to rethink its response to the Coronavirus outbreak. Right now, it is encouraging athletes to use a process for transferring to an alternative competition. The African Championships would have been an option for many Asian athletes after the postponement of their championships.
