Tamás Aján Resigns as IWF President

The President of the International Weightlifting Federation, Hungarian Tamás Aján has tendered his resignation. In a statement, the IWF accepted his resignation, approving his retirement.

Aján has been under investigation following corruption allegations made by a German TV documentary. Most recently, acting President Ursula Papandrea accused him of obstructing the investigation and called on the IWF Executive Board to vote to expel him.

It seems that Aján did not want to wait for the formal decision of the Executive board, handing in his resignation after twenty years as IWF President and over forty years in the administration of the sport.

Whatever the truth of the allegations against him, the departure of Aján seems certain to herald changes at the top of weightlifting
